Honda EU2200i Oil Type, Capacity and Maintenance Schedule

Updated 2026-10-31 · Written and checked by the Manual Matters team against the manufacturer documents listed under Sources.

Short answer: the Honda EU2200i ships without oil. It takes SAE 10W-30 4-stroke detergent oil, API SJ or later, up to a maximum of 14 oz (0.44 L), filled to the upper limit of the oil filler neck. Change the oil after the first month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours, whichever comes first. The spark plug is an NGK CR5HSB gapped at 0.024–0.028 in (0.6–0.7 mm). All figures are from Honda's EU2200i owner's manual (current version with the CO-MINDER shut-off system).

The EU2200i is not like most open-frame generators. It has no drain plug, so you drain the oil by tipping the generator. Its oil capacity is also much smaller than a typical 3500 W machine. This guide covers the details that trip owners up.

Oil type

From Honda's "Engine Oil Recommendations":

Capacity: 14 oz, and why "do not overfill" matters here

Honda gives a maximum capacity of 14 oz (0.44 L). Fill only until the oil reaches the upper limit of the oil filler neck, with the generator level. Honda warns that if you overfill, the excess oil may be pushed into the air cleaner housing and air filter. A 1-quart bottle holds 32 oz, so do not empty it into the engine. Pour slowly and watch the neck.

Filling it the first time

  1. Place the generator on a level surface.
  2. Loosen the maintenance cover screw and remove the maintenance cover on the side.
  3. Remove the oil filler cap (counterclockwise).
  4. Add oil until it reaches the upper limit of the filler neck.
  5. Screw the cap in securely, then reinstall and tighten the maintenance cover.

Check the level the same way before each use.

How to change the oil (no drain plug)

Honda's procedure:

  1. Drain the oil while the engine is warm so it drains quickly and completely.
  2. Turn the engine switch and the fuel filler cap vent lever to OFF. This reduces the chance of a fuel leak when you tip the generator.
  3. Remove the maintenance cover.
  4. Put a container next to the engine.
  5. Remove the oil filler cap and tip the generator toward the oil filler neck to drain the oil.
  6. Put the generator back level and fill with the recommended oil to the upper limit. Do not overfill.
  7. Reinstall the cap and the maintenance cover.

Honda asks you to take used oil to a recycling center in a sealed container. Do not put it in the trash, on the ground or down a drain.

Tip: a small funnel with a flexible spout and a shallow drain pan make the tipping drain much less messy. Wipe up any oil on the case before you put the cover back.

Full maintenance schedule

Honda says to service at each listed interval in months or hours, whichever comes first. It also warns that skipping the schedule could result in non-warrantable failures.

IntervalTask
Each useCheck engine oil level; check air cleaner
First month or 20 hoursChange engine oil
Every 3 months or 50 hoursClean air cleaner (more often in dust)
Every 6 months or 100 hoursChange engine oil; check/adjust spark plug; clean spark arrester; clean fuel tank and filter*
Every year or 200 hoursReplace spark plug; check/adjust valve clearance*
Every 300 hoursClean combustion chamber*
Every 2 yearsCheck fuel tube, replace if necessary*

\*Honda says these should be serviced by a dealer unless you have the proper tools and mechanical skill. For commercial use, Honda asks you to log hours of operation. For sustained high-load, high-temperature or dusty use, consult your dealer.

The first oil change matters most. Honda's quick reference page lists only one specific job after the first start: first 20 hours, change engine oil.

Spark plug service

Our spark plug gap guide shows how to use a wire gauge if you have not done it before.

CO-MINDER: a stop that is not a fault

Current EU2200i units include CO-MINDER, a system that automatically stops the engine before the surrounding carbon monoxide concentration goes above a set level. If your generator shuts off and the Fault/CO indicator shows, the manual has a "How to restart when stopped by CO-MINDER" procedure. Move the generator to a more open outdoor location first. Our generator placement and extension cord guide covers where to put it.

Storage

Honda's storage section points out that the air in a partly filled fuel tank promotes fuel deterioration. How long fuel lasts depends on the gasoline blend and storage temperature. Follow the manual's fuel storage steps, and compare methods in Run it dry or stabilize it?. If it will not start after storage, use the no-start checklist.

FAQ

How much oil does a Honda EU2200i take?

A maximum of 14 oz (0.44 L). Fill to the upper limit of the filler neck with the generator level, and do not overfill.

What oil does the EU2200i use?

SAE 10W-30 4-stroke detergent oil, API SJ or later, for general use. Other grades from the manual's chart are allowed for some average temperatures.

When is the first oil change on a new EU2200i?

After the first month or 20 hours, whichever comes first. After that, every 6 months or 100 hours.

Does the EU2200i have an oil drain plug?

No. Honda's procedure is to remove the filler cap and tip the generator toward the filler neck, with the engine switch and fuel cap vent lever off.

What spark plug and gap does the EU2200i use?

NGK CR5HSB, gapped 0.024–0.028 in (0.6–0.7 mm), torqued to 8.7 lbf·ft.
