Generac GP2500i Maintenance and Storage: Oil, Spark Plug, Fuel and Break-In

Updated 2026-10-29 · Written and checked by the Manual Matters team against the manufacturer documents listed under Sources.

Short answer: the Generac GP2500i inverter generator has a 98 cc engine that holds 0.35 L (0.36 qt) of oil. Generac's manual says to change the oil after the first 30 hours, then every 100 hours, or every month when running under heavy load or in high temperatures. Check the oil before each use or every 8 hours. The spark plug gap is 0.024–0.028 in. Use 87-octane unleaded with no more than 10% ethanol.

Valve clearance (intake 0.10 mm, exhaust 0.15 mm, per the manual) is listed as a dealer job.

Oil

Generac lists SAE 30, 10W-30 or synthetic 5W-30, chosen by temperature. Use petroleum-based oil during break-in before switching to synthetic. Do not overfill; capacity is only 0.36 quart.

Spark plug

Generac lists E6TC, E6RTC or BPR6HS, gapped 0.024–0.028 in. Install finger tight, then tighten an additional 3/8 to 1/2 turn. Compare with other engines in the Briggs spark plug gap chart.

Air filter

Wash the element in soapy water and squeeze dry without twisting, as the manual describes. Let it dry before reinstalling.

Storage

Generac gives three options:

  1. Best, if possible: run the generator about 30 minutes every 30 days.
  2. Stabilize: add fuel stabilizer and run 10–15 minutes to circulate it. Generac says treated fuel can be stored up to 24 months.
  3. Drain: if fuel is not treated, drain it and run until the engine stops from lack of fuel.

Then change the oil, remove the spark plug and pour 5–10 cc of engine oil into the cylinder, reinstall the plug, and pull the starter slowly until you feel resistance. Do not tip or transport it at more than 15°. For the wider storage debate, see Run it dry or stabilize it?.

Safety: carbon monoxide

Generac's manual is clear: never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or any enclosed space. Keep at least 5 feet of clearance around it, as the manual specifies.

FAQ

How much oil does a Generac GP2500i hold?

0.35 L (0.36 qt). Fill carefully and check the level after filling.

When is the first oil change on a GP2500i?

After the first 30 hours of use. Then every 100 hours, or monthly under heavy load or high temperature.

Can I use synthetic oil?

Yes, synthetic 5W-30 is listed, but Generac says to use petroleum-based oil for break-in before switching to synthetic.

My generator won't start after sitting a year. What first?

Start with fuel: untreated fuel left over a year is likely stale. Drain, refill fresh, and work through the checklist in Lawn Mower Won't Start After Winter, which applies to most small engines.
