Predator 3500 Inverter Generator: 30-Hour Break-In, Oil Type and Oil Change

Updated 2026-10-30 · Written and checked by the Manual Matters team against the manufacturer documents listed under Sources.

Short answer: the Predator 3500 inverter generator from Harbor Freight takes 20 fl oz of SAE 10W-30. It ships without oil, so you must fill it before the first start. The owner's manual sets a break-in period of about 30 hours, during which you should not exceed 75% of the generator's running wattage. Change the oil after the break-in, then follow the manual's maintenance chart. Fuel must be 87+ octane unleaded, treated with stabilizer, and no more than E10. All figures here are from Harbor Freight's owner's manual for item 71358 (the item 59137 manual shows the same oil and break-in figures).

That 30-hour break-in is much longer than some competitors. For example, the Champion 3500W uses a 5-hour break-in at 50% load. Do not mix up the two brands' rules.

Key specs (item 71358 manual)

SpecValue

Different production versions of this generator have slightly different tank sizes and other figures. ManualsLib's copy of one version lists a 2.6-gallon tank, for example. Check the item number on your unit and use that manual.

Filling and checking the oil

Harbor Freight's warning is blunt. The generator is shipped without oil, and the warranty is void if the crankcase is not filled before first use and before each use after that. The engine will not start with low or no oil.

Steps from the manual:

  1. Engine stopped and level.
  2. Loosen the screw and remove the Oil Fill Access Door on the side of the generator.
  3. Clean the top of the oil fill cap/dipstick and the area around it, then remove it (counterclockwise).
  4. Check the level: oil should come up to the edge of the fill hole.
  5. Add SAE 10W-30 as needed until it reaches that level.
  6. Thread the cap back in (clockwise) and replace the access door.

Do this before every use. Predator's troubleshooting table lists "check engine oil before EVERY use" more than once. It also notes that running on a slope can trigger the low-oil shutdown.

The 30-hour break-in

From the manual:

Practical tips that stay inside those rules:

How to change the oil

Wait for the engine to cool. Harbor Freight warns that oil is very hot during operation and can cause burns. Steps from the 71358 manual:

  1. Engine stopped and level.
  2. Remove the oil fill access door and pull the oil drain hose out of the generator.
  3. Clean around the oil fill cap/dipstick and remove it.
  4. Put a drain pan under the drain point, open it and let the oil drain completely.
  5. Close the drain and put the hose back.
  6. Refill with SAE 10W-30 to the edge of the fill hole (about 20 fl oz). Make sure the generator is level while filling. The manual warns that filling off level leads to overfilling, which can damage the engine.
  7. Reinstall the cap and access door, and recycle the used oil.

One version of the manual (ManualsLib copy) describes a drain plug on the bottom of the machine instead of a drain hose. Follow the drain method in your own manual.

After the break-in: the maintenance chart

The manual's chart has columns for before each use, monthly or every 8 hours, every 3 months or 50 hours, every 6 months or 100 hours, yearly or every 300 hours and every 2 years. Tasks covered:

Find the check marks for each task in your copy of the manual (page 18 onward in the 71358 manual). Harbor Freight also notes that real intervals depend on duty cycle, temperature, air quality and fuel quality. Under heavy or dusty use, service sooner.

Storage rules (and the warranty catch)

If the generator will sit idle for more than 20 days, the manual describes a storage procedure:

After storage: drain and refill with fresh fuel if untreated gas has sat for a month, if treated gas has gone past the stabilizer's time limit, or if the engine does not start. If it still will not start, use our generator no-start checklist. For the stabilize-or-drain question in general, see Run it dry or stabilize it?.

FAQ

How much oil does a Predator 3500 take?

20 fl oz of SAE 10W-30. Fill until the oil reaches the edge of the fill hole, with the generator level.

How long is the Predator 3500 break-in?

About 30 hours of use. Stay under 75% of running wattage (2250 W on a 3000-running-watt unit), then change the oil.

Does the Predator 3500 come with oil?

No. It ships without oil, and running it without oil voids the warranty.

Do I have to use fuel stabilizer?

Harbor Freight specifies 87+ octane stabilizer-treated gasoline. The 71358 manual's fuel section says to add stabilizer or the warranty is void.

What is the spark plug gap?

0.027–0.031 in, according to the 71358 manual's specifications.
