Toro Power Max 824 OE: Oil Capacity, Maintenance Schedule and Specs

Updated 2026-10-31 · Written and checked by the Manual Matters team against the manufacturer documents listed under Sources.

Short answer: the Toro Power Max 824 OE (model 37798, 252cc Toro engine) holds 0.70 L (24 fl oz) of engine oil. Toro lists 5W-30 as the recommended oil, API SJ or higher in the operator's manual. Do not pour in all 24 oz after a drain: some oil stays in the crankcase. Start with about 3/4 and finish using the dipstick. The first service is at 2 hours (check the traction and auger/impeller cables). The first oil change is at 5 hours, then yearly. The spark plug is replaced every 100 hours, gapped to 0.030 in (0.76 mm). Sources: Toro's operator's manual, its parts specifications page and its product page for model 37798.

Toro has made several 824 OE versions under different serial ranges. Check the model and serial number on your machine, then look up the matching manual on Toro's parts page. The figures below apply to model 37798.

The gearbox, coil gap and plug list come from Toro's parts specifications page. The oil capacity and service classification come from the operator's manual, and the fuel tank size and recommended oil from the product page. Toro's parts page lists API SH or higher; the manual says SJ or higher. Any oil labelled SJ or newer meets both.

Toro's maintenance schedule

WhenWhat
After the first 2 hoursInspect the traction cable and the auger/impeller cable; adjust if necessary
After the first 5 hoursChange the engine oil
Before each use or dailyCheck the engine-oil level; add oil if necessary
Every 100 hoursReplace the spark plug
YearlyCheck and adjust skids and scraper; inspect/adjust/replace both cables; check auger-gearbox oil; change engine oil; lubricate the hex shaft
Yearly or before storageCheck tire pressure (17–20 psi); drain the fuel and run the engine to dry out the tank and carburetor at season end; have a dealer inspect and replace the drive and auger/impeller belts if needed

Why the 2-hour cable check matters

New control cables stretch slightly as they settle in. If they stretch, the drive or auger may slip or not engage fully. Toro asks for an inspection at 2 hours and again every year. Cable adjustment procedures are model-specific and illustrated in the manual. If you are not comfortable doing them, a dealer can do it quickly.

Changing the engine oil, step by step

Toro suggests running the engine for a few minutes first, because warm oil flows better and carries more contaminants out with it. Then shut the engine off.

  1. Move the machine to a level surface.
  2. Clean around the oil-drain cap.
  3. Slide a drain pan under the drain extension and remove the oil-drain cap.
  4. Let the oil drain. Take it to a local recycling center.
  5. Install the oil-drain cap and tighten it securely.
  6. Clean around the oil-fill/dipstick and remove the dipstick.
  7. Pour in about 3/4 of the engine's capacity. That is roughly 18 oz of the 24 oz total.
  8. Wait 3 minutes for the oil to settle.
  9. Wipe the dipstick, insert it without screwing it in, remove it and read the level.
  10. If low, add a small amount, wait 3 minutes and check again. Repeat until correct. If too high, drain the excess.
  11. Install the dipstick securely.

Toro warns that running the engine with the oil too low or too high may damage it. Overfilling is also one of the hard-starting causes in Toro's troubleshooting table. Use the viscosity chart in your manual if you live somewhere unusually cold or mild. Toro's product page lists 5W-30 as the recommended oil.

Ariens owners should use Ariens' own chart, because the capacities differ (Ariens oil guide).

No shear pins on this model

Many two-stage blowers rely on shear pins. Toro's product page says the Power Max 824 OE uses Hardened Gears in the auger gearbox, so there are no shear pins to replace. If the auger hits hard material, the engine is designed to stall to prevent damage.

So if your 824 OE suddenly stalls on a newspaper or a chunk of ice, that is normal. Shut it off, remove the key, clear the obstruction with a tool (never your hand), and restart it. If it runs but will not throw snow, go through our auger not turning checklist, skipping the shear pin step.

Fuel: what Toro recommends

From the product page:

At the end of the season, Toro's schedule says to drain the fuel and run the engine until the tank and carburetor are dry. That is different from Cub Cadet's "stabilize and run" advice in our off-season storage guide. For your Toro, follow Toro.

Spark plug

Replace it every 100 hours, and set the gap to 0.030 in (0.76 mm) before installing it. Toro's parts page lists Champion RN9YC and NGK BPR6ES. If the machine is hard to start, Toro's troubleshooting table lists a pitted, fouled or wrongly gapped plug as one of the causes. The full cold-start sequence is in our snow blower won't start guide.

FAQ

How much oil does a Toro Power Max 824 OE hold?

0.70 L (24 fl oz) for model 37798. After draining, add about 3/4, wait 3 minutes, then top up using the dipstick, because some oil remains in the crankcase.

What oil does the Toro 824 OE use?

Toro's product page lists 5W-30. The manual specifies API SJ or higher and has a viscosity chart by temperature.

When is the first oil change on a new Toro 824 OE?

After the first 5 hours, then yearly. Inspect the cables after the first 2 hours.

Does the Toro Power Max 824 OE have shear pins?

No. Toro says it uses hardened auger gears, and the engine stalls on purpose if the auger hits something hard.

What is the spark plug gap on the Toro 824 OE?
