Snow Blower Off-Season Storage: The Spring Checklist by Machine Type

Updated 2026-10-29 · Written and checked by the Manual Matters team against the manufacturer documents listed under Sources.

Short answer: at the end of winter, inspect the wear parts (shave plate, skid shoes, paddles, belts), change the engine oil, check the spark plug, wipe off road salt and oil rust-prone metal, then deal with the fuel. Cub Cadet recommends filling the tank with fresh gas plus stabilizer and running the engine about five minutes, because a dry fuel system can rust and dry out its seals. Honda-engined machines may call for running the fuel system dry instead, so check your engine manual. Store it covered, with airflow underneath.

Off-season checklist for single-stage, two-stage and all snow blowers based on Cub Cadet's guide
Off-season checklist for single-stage, two-stage and all snow blowers based on Cub Cadet's guide

Single-stage snow blowers

  1. Shave plate: inspect it. Cub Cadet notes it is reversible on many single-stage models, so a worn edge can be flipped before you replace it.
  2. Paddles: check the rubber auger paddles for wear and replace if worn.
  3. Belt: inspect for cracks, glazing or fraying.

Two-stage and three-stage snow blowers

  1. Shave plate and skid shoes: inspect and replace or adjust worn parts.
  2. Hex shaft: apply a light coat of oil to the hex shaft. Cub Cadet warns to keep oil off the drive plate and friction disc, because oil there causes the drive to slip.
  3. Belts: inspect auger and drive belts.
  4. Shear pins: a good moment to check them and stock spares (shear pin replacement guide).

All machines

  1. Change the engine oil so used, acidic oil does not sit all summer. Use the grade in your manual; winter machines need an oil that starts in cold weather (oil type guide).
  2. Check the spark plug and replace if worn.
  3. Wipe off salt and moisture, then oil areas prone to rust.
  4. Fuel: fill with fresh gasoline mixed with stabilizer and run about five minutes (Cub Cadet). If your engine manual says to run dry instead, follow it. The trade-offs are in Run it dry or stabilize it?.
  5. Cover and store in a dry place. Cub Cadet suggests leaving some airflow underneath the cover.

FAQ

Should I leave gas in my snow blower over the summer?

Cub Cadet recommends a full tank of fresh, stabilized fuel, run for about five minutes. Some engine makers, including Honda for its mower engines, recommend an empty fuel system for long storage. Follow your engine's manual.

Do I really need to change the oil before storage?

Cub Cadet lists an oil change as part of off-season prep for all machine types.

Can I oil the friction disc to keep it from rusting?

No. Cub Cadet specifically says to keep oil off the drive plate and friction disc.

How do I know the shave plate needs replacing?

Inspect the edge for wear. On reversible plates, flip it once; replace it when both edges are worn.
