Ariens Snow Blower Oil Type and Capacity by Engine Size (AX Engines)

Updated 2026-10-30 · Written and checked by the Manual Matters team against the manufacturer documents listed under Sources.

Short answer: Ariens snow blowers with the Ariens AX snow engine take 5W-30 4-stroke automotive detergent oil, with an API service category of SJ or higher. Synthetic 5W-30 is an acceptable alternative. Capacity depends on the engine's displacement: 16 oz for 136cc to 223cc engines, 20 oz for 254cc, 32 oz for 291cc and 306cc, and 38 oz for 369cc to 420cc engines. All figures come from the Ariens AX snow engine manual.

Why 5W-30 and not SAE 30

A snow blower runs in the coldest air any small engine sees. A summer mower oil such as straight SAE 30 thickens in freezing weather, which makes the engine hard to pull over and slow to get oil to its parts. The "5W" in 5W-30 means the oil stays thinner when cold. Ariens' engine manual says 5W-30 is recommended for general use, and Ariens' own synthetic-blend 5W-30 bottle is marketed for outdoor power equipment running in cool temperatures. Our SAE 30 vs 10W-30 guide explains how multigrade numbers work if you want the background.

What the manual actually says:

Do not use 2-stroke oil, and do not mix oil into the gasoline. The AX is a 4-stroke engine with a separate crankcase.

Ariens AX oil capacity chart

Find your engine size (cc) on the engine decal or in your snow blower's manual, then read across.

Engine displacementOil capacity
136cc16 oz (0.473 L)
179cc16 oz (0.473 L)
208cc16 oz (0.473 L)
223cc16 oz (0.473 L)
254cc20 oz (0.591 L)
291cc32 oz (0.946 L)
306cc32 oz (0.946 L)
369cc38 oz (1.123 L)
414cc38 oz (1.123 L)
420cc38 oz (1.123 L)

The manual adds an important note: total capacity could be as much as 4 oz more than the chart, because of the engine's mounting angle and how completely it drained. So the chart is a starting point, and the dipstick is the final word. Add oil gradually and check the level as you go.

As an example of the chart in practice, Ariens' 2018/2019 bid specifications list the 208cc Path-Pro single-stage machines with 0.473 L of 5W30. That matches the 16 oz line above.

Ariens sells 5W-30 in 16 oz (part 00091000) and 32 oz (part 00067600) bottles. A 16 oz bottle covers one change on the smaller engines. A 291cc or 306cc engine needs two bottles or one 32 oz bottle. Any brand that meets the spec above is fine.

How to check the oil level

  1. Park the machine on a level surface with the engine off.
  2. Check before every start. The manual notes that the engine may be shipped with or without oil, so a new blower must be checked before its first start.
  3. Read the dipstick as your manual describes. Ariens' AX manual describes checking with the dipstick screwed in fully. That differs from many other engines, where you just rest the dipstick on the threads, so follow the manual for the engine you have.
  4. Add a little at a time until the level reaches the full mark. Do not overfill.

Running with low oil or the wrong oil can damage the engine, according to the manual.

How to change the oil (Ariens procedure)

The AX manual's procedure is unusual in one way: it starts with a cold engine and then runs it briefly.

  1. Start with a cold engine. Start it and run it for 1–2 minutes, which warms the oil just enough to drain well.
  2. Stop the engine. Put the run/stop switch in Stop and remove the safety key, or the Stop/Run key on keyed models. This prevents an accidental start.
  3. Support the drain tube. Many AX engines drain through a tube. Hold the tube body with a 14 mm wrench turned clockwise so it does not loosen in the block.
  4. Remove the drain plug. Turn the 10 mm drain plug (or the 16 mm drain cap on some versions) counterclockwise. Keep the crush washer.
  5. Drain completely into a pan.
  6. Check the drain tube is tight. The manual specifies 36 N·m (320–330 in-lb) for the tube in the cylinder block.
  7. Reinstall the plug and crush washer. The washer must go between the drain tube and plug, or it will leak. Torque the plug to 31 N·m (270–280 in-lb). On front-drain versions the manual calls for Teflon tape or pipe-thread sealer.
  8. Refill with 5W-30 to the capacity in the chart, then check and top up using the dipstick.
  9. Recycle the used oil at a parts store or collection site.

If you do not own a torque wrench, snug the plug firmly, but do not lean on it. Overtightening an aluminum block thread is an expensive mistake.

When to change it

Your snow blower's own operator's manual has the service schedule for your model, so use it. Two points apply to almost every winter machine:

Common mistakes

If the engine will not start after the oil change, the oil is rarely the reason. Work through our snow blower cold-start guide. For other winter jobs, see Snow Blowers.

FAQ

What kind of oil does an Ariens snow blower take?

4-stroke automotive detergent oil, 5W-30, API SJ or higher. Synthetic 5W-30 is acceptable.

How much oil does an Ariens 208cc or 223cc snow blower hold?

16 oz (0.473 L), according to the AX engine chart. Up to 4 oz more may be needed, so finish with the dipstick.

How much oil for an Ariens 254cc, 306cc or 420cc?

254cc takes 20 oz. 291cc and 306cc take 32 oz. 369cc, 414cc and 420cc take 38 oz.

Can I use 10W-30 in my Ariens snow blower?

The AX manual recommends 5W-30 for general use. It does not list 10W-30 as the general-use oil, so stick with 5W-30 for winter starting.

Is synthetic oil OK in an Ariens?

Yes. The manual says synthetic oil is an acceptable alternative.
