Honda GCV170 and GCV200 Oil Type, Capacity and Maintenance Schedule

Updated 2026-10-29 · Written and checked by the Manual Matters team against the manufacturer documents listed under Sources.

Short answer: Honda's owner's manual for the GCV170 and GCV200 calls for 4-stroke detergent oil meeting API SJ or later, with SAE 10W-30 recommended for general use. Oil capacity is 13.5 oz (0.40 L); after a drain, the refill is 12.0–13.5 oz. Change it after the first month or 5 hours, then every 6 months or 50 hours, or every 25 hours under heavy load or high temperatures.

Every 2 yearsCheck fuel lines

Some of the yearly jobs, such as valve clearance and idle speed, need special tools; if you are not equipped, have an authorized Honda dealer do them.

How to change the oil (Honda's method)

  1. Run the engine briefly to warm the oil, then stop it.
  2. Turn the fuel valve OFF (if equipped) so fuel does not leak when tilted.
  3. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick.
  4. Tilt the mower with the muffler side down, never the carburetor or air-filter side, and drain the oil into a container.
  5. Return the mower to level and refill with 12.0–13.5 oz of SAE 10W-30.
  6. Check the level: wipe the dipstick, insert it without screwing it in, and remove it. Read the level against the marks on the dipstick and top up if needed.
  7. Recycle the used oil at a collection point.

Spark plug

Honda's manual lists the NGK BPR6ES (and BPR5ES for some applications) and a gap of 0.028–0.030 in (0.70–0.80 mm). Replace it every 2 years or 200 hours, and check it yearly. For Briggs engines, see the Briggs & Stratton spark plug gap chart, since the numbers are different.

Fuel

Honda specifies unleaded gasoline of 86 pump octane or higher, with no more than 10% ethanol (or 5% methanol). For storage, Honda's instructions differ from Briggs's; see Run it dry or stabilize it?.

FAQ

Can I use SAE 30 in a Honda GCV170?

Honda recommends SAE 10W-30 for general use. If you want a different grade for your climate, use only what the manual for your engine lists.

How much oil does a Honda GCV200 take?

13.5 oz (0.40 L) total. After draining, expect to add 12.0 to 13.5 oz. Always confirm on the dipstick.

Why shouldn't I screw in the dipstick to check oil?

Because that is how Honda's procedure for this engine is written. Follow the manual's method so your reading matches its marks.

Which way do I tip the mower?

Muffler side down. Honda's manual says never to tip it with the carburetor side down. Compare with the Briggs procedure in our Briggs maintenance schedule.
