Briggs & Stratton Maintenance Schedule: What to Do at 5, 25, 50 Hours and Every Year
Short answer: Briggs & Stratton's published schedule is: change the oil after the first 5 hours; check oil every 8 hours or daily; clean the air filter and pre-cleaner every 25 hours or yearly; change the oil and check the muffler every 50 hours or yearly; and once a year replace the air filter, pre-cleaner, spark plug and fuel filter and clean the cooling system. Do each job at the hour mark or the calendar mark, whichever comes first, and more often in dusty conditions.
Your operator's manual can override this (Briggs says so itself), and EXi "Just Check & Add" engines follow their own schedule.
The schedule as a checklist
| When | Job |
|---|---|
| After the first 5 hours | Change the oil (break-in change) |
| Every 8 hours or daily | Check oil level; clean around muffler and controls; clean finger guard |
| Every 25 hours or annually | Clean air filter and pre-cleaner (more often if dusty) |
| Every 50 hours or annually | Change engine oil; check muffler and spark arrester |
| Annually | Replace air filter and pre-cleaner; replace spark plug; replace fuel filter; clean air cooling system |
How to use it if you have no hour meter
Most homeowner mowers have no hour meter, so the "or annually" half of each line is the one that usually applies. A practical routine:
- Every mow: check the oil on level ground before starting. This covers the 8-hour line.
- Mid-season: clean the air filter. For a typical weekly mowing season this lands near the 25-hour mark.
- End or start of each season: change the oil, replace the spark plug and air filter, and clean grass from the cooling fins. That covers every annual line in one session.
- New engine: do not skip the 5-hour break-in oil change. Briggs calls it "very important" because it removes particles worn off during break-in.
Air filter: clean or replace?
Briggs uses three filter types, and the interval depends on which you have:
- Paper cartridge: replace it; install the new cartridge with the paper pleats facing out.
- Foam only: must be oiled. Saturate a new foam element with fresh engine oil, squeeze out the excess in a clean cloth. Briggs says to replace foam every 3 months or 25 hours, whichever comes first.
- Dual element (foam pre-cleaner plus paper): replace the pre-cleaner every 25 hours or every season and the paper cartridge every 100 hours. Without a pre-cleaner, replace the cartridge every 25 hours or every season.

FAQ
How often should I change the oil in a Briggs & Stratton mower?
After the first 5 hours on a new engine, then every 50 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. Check the level every time you mow.
Does synthetic oil let me go longer between changes?
No. Briggs states that using synthetic oil does not change the 50-hour oil change interval.
Do I need to change the spark plug every year?
Briggs lists spark plug replacement as an annual job in its standard schedule. Your operator's manual may differ for your engine.
My engine is an EXi model. Does this schedule apply?
Not entirely. Briggs says EXi series engines do not require an oil change and points owners to the operator's manual for their schedule.
